Mary Elizabeth Sullivan, 97, of Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, surrounded by family and dear friends. Mary’s family offers their deepest gratitude to the extraordinary Crisis Care Team at Avow Hospice, whose compassion, clinical expertise, and steadfast devotion to her care made it possible for her to fulfill a long-standing wish—to spend her final days surrounded by love and comfort in her cherished Naples home.
Mary’s warmth, humor, and quiet strength touched everyone she met. Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on July 24, 1928, Mary’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, tradition, and simple joys. She delighted in hosting family dinners and afternoon teas, where her cranberry-orange scones became legendary among family and friends. Her home was always a haven of warmth and welcome, reflecting her devotion to those she loved. A passionate gardener, Mary found joy in nature and tended her vibrant orchids with care. Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her with grace and resilience.
Several years after graduating from St. Patrick’s High School, Mary was introduced to the love of her life, Frederick L. Sullivan, Jr., and together they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage and more than 40 beautiful years in Naples, Florida. During Fred’s tenure as a Naples City Councilman from 1990 to 1998, Mary was his steadfast partner and most enthusiastic supporter, graciously embracing public life and taking great joy in standing beside him as he served the community they both loved.
Mary was the proud matriarch of six children: Patricia (Bob), Regina, Fred III (Graceann), David (Theann), Paul, and Eileen (Aldo), and adored her 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, each a source of immeasurable joy. She is survived by five of her six children and preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph P. Laughlin; her beloved husband, Fred (2013); her cherished son, David (2025); and siblings Joe Jr., Louise, and Patricia.
Those who knew Mary will remember her kindness, unwavering faith, humor, and determined resilience. Though we no longer see her smile, her strength and determination remain an enduring example for all who knew her.
A funeral Mass celebrating Mary’s life will be held on Friday, March 27 at 10:30am at St. Anne Catholic Church in Naples, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Avow Foundation, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
