Avow names building in tribute to Elizabeth & Leonard Smith
$1 Million Estate Gift Will Support Hospice Care in Collier County
On December 8, Avow held a dedication reception to officially name its administration building the E & L Smith Administration Center. The building was named in memory of Elizabeth and Leonard Smith who provided a significant estate gift to Avow.
“Elizabeth Z. Smith was touched and inspired by the loving and compassionate hospice care her husband Leonard, and other members of her family, received through Avow,” said the Smiths’ estate attorney, Bradley G. Rigor of Quarles & Brady LLC. “She was particularly impressed with Avow’s nursing and spiritual care.”
Avow provided hospice care for Leonard Smith in 2003 and Elizabeth’s mother-in-law and brother in subsequent years. Ultimately Elizabeth herself was cared for by Avow before her passing in 2010.
Elizabeth was the sole heir to L. C. Smith Pet Supplies in Delmar, New York which she and Leonard founded over 50 years ago. The Smiths’ $1,000,000 gift is earmarked to advance Avow’s hospice care program.
The administration building, now named for the Smiths, is one of three buildings located on the Avow campus located at 1095 Whippoorwill Lane in Naples. It was built in 1993.
According to Jeffrey McManus, Avow Vice President of Advancement, “The intent behind Elizabeth’s generous gift is very inspiring. Avow is fortunate, thankful and very proud to have the E & L Smith name grace our building.”
